The Parish of Sutton with Seaford

a sermon preached 27th Feb 2022 in St Luke’s

Peter James and John have three amazing awesome experiences. One would have been enough. Did you spot any of the amazing moments?

  1. Jesus is transfigured (washing powder? / dark glasses / cass alb) Jesus is changed and suddenly blindingly bright! (its like a matrix moment, or more likely the matrix film nicked this idea.)

Moments when you see your children do or say something and you realise that they have grown up a bit more, ready to be a bit more responsible, ready for a later bed time? They do something in a school assembly – and suddenly you see them differently.    They haven’t really changed, but you have, you now see them differently.

Here’s a moment where the Disciples will see Jesus differently. Jesus doesn’t really change; he’s always been like this.

It might be that when you think of Jesus you think of baby in the manger, the nice man who says how we should be nice to each other, the teacher who teaches us to pray and to forgive and tells us cool stories and does some amazing miracles – so really when you think about it we could have seen this coming.

Jesus is transfigured. Now we see Jesus differently. He’s a bit more awesome than we appreciated. Jesus hasn’t changed – we have.

Sometimes this happens for us when we worship, pray, sometimes when we’re just still and thinking, reading bible, and suddenly we see things differently – we see Jesus differently.

  1. Awesome 2 – Jesus is with Moses & Elijah.

(?dressing up?, staff, tablets?)

Anyone like to have a guess for the date of Moses 1500bc  / Elijah 850bc?

These are the 2 most important heroes of the OT. Okay there’s Ruth and Esther and Samuel and David and … but that’s not the point.

Point is that these people who are long dead to us, are not dead to God.

We see Jesus chatting to these two with the same easy way that Jesus speaks to Peter and James and John, and the same way, in prayer, that we speak to Jesus.

Pause – the more you think about that the more awesome it is.

  1. Cloud – and the Voice of God saying This is my Son!

3rd awesome moment! (white snood)

Takehome point? What’s Peter’s conclusions from this? Lets build a shelter – (memorial) – equivalent of lets capture this moment in a selfie or Tupperware box  – sometimes we want these moments to last forever – it really is a totally wow moment.

What does God say from the Cloud- what’s the Father’s take home point: Listen to him!

Help me Jesus, change me, Jesus, so that I might learn to see you as you are!
