THE SERVICE

Sing1: O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold Him, Born the King of angels;

O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above; Glory to God In the highest:

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, Born this happy morning, Jesus, to Thee be glory given; Word of the Father Now in flesh appearing:

Welcome

Collect for St John, Apostle, Evangelist.:   Merciful Lord, cast your bright beams of light upon the Church: that, being enlightened by the teaching of your blessed apostle and evangelist Saint John, we may so walk in the light of your truth that we may at last attain to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ your incarnate Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Reading         1 John 1

Introduction to confession: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

A penitential prayer for use with small children.: Father God, we re sorry for the things we do and say and think which make you sad, and for not thinking of others before ourselves. Please forgive us and help us to love you and other people more and more.

May the God of all healing and forgiveness draw us to himself and cleanse us from all our sins, that we may behold the gloty of his Son, the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sing: On Christmas day, a humble girl, gives birth to hope for all the world, this is Immanuel.

How awesome and mysterious, the Lord of heaven draws near to us, this is Immanuel.

The hands that once split night from day now feebly clutch a blade of hay, this is Immanuel.

Majestic king, now small and weak, the Word of God must learn to speak, this is Immanuel.

This is our God, seen by our eyes, the love of the Father made known in Jesus Christ. This is our God, worthy of praise, the love of the Father revealed on Christmas day.

The shepherds come and bow to him, the Lamb who takes away our sin, this is Immanuel.

For God has entered time and space to show the world his endless grace, this is Immanuel.

Immanuel, Immanuel. Our God is with us now. Immanuel, Immanuel. Our God is with us now.

Gospel: Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord.

John 21.19b-x

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ

Talk

Sing: See him lying on a bed of straw, A draughty stable with an open door; Mary cradling the babe she bore; The Prince of glory is His name.

O now carry me to Bethlehem, To see the Lord appear to men; Just as poor as was the stable then, The Prince of glory when He came.

v2. Star of silver, sweep across the skies, Show where Jesus in the manger lies; Shepherds, swiftly from your stupor rise To see the Saviour of the world.

v3. Angels, sing again the song you sang, Bring God’s glory to the heart of man; Sing that Bethlehem’s little baby can Be salvation to the soul.

Intercessions

In the face of the Gospel,

Let us ask God for a good Christmas:

That no powerful nation should tax the poor or uproot them;

That no unmarried mother should be put away in disgrace;

That no door will be shut on those who need to find it open;

That shepherds and sheep and all of nature need not be afraid;

That barbed wire and angry soldiers may not be found in Bethlehem;

That wise men and wise women might appear in the troubled places of this world.

That children may be preserved from those who would abuse them;

That this Christmas, worship may become a manger

and the Church a stable

and the rumour become a reality that Christ has come among us.

Lord’s Prayer  :Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever.  Amen.

Sing: O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.

How silently, how silently The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven. No ear may hear His coming; But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him, still The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in; Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Immanuel!

Blessing: May the Babe of Bethlehem be yours to tend, may the Boy of Nazareth be your friend, may the Man of Galilee his healing send, may the Crucified Jesus his courage lend, may the risen Lord Jesus be with you to the end   and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Go inpeace to love and to serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.

Sing: God rest you merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay, Remember, Christ, our Saviour Was born on Christmas day, To save us all from Satan’s power When we were gone astray:

And it’s tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, And it’s tidings of comfort and joy
